Coimbatore Medical College. MBBS 150 Seats. PG 85 Seats. Started as a district headquarters hospital in 1908. The foundation stone laid by the then Governor of Madras, Sir Lord Ampthill.
Later in 1966 under the leadership of the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Sri C Kamaraj, became a full-fledged medical college. The medical college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.
MBBS, MD, MS, DM, MCh & Diploma Courses – The UG course is MBBS. The PG courses are in PG Diploma, MD, MS, and MCh. The Courses are recognized by Medical Council of India.
Origin of College – Just like many other medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Even Medical College’s origin started in the year 1908 as a district headquartered hospital under the administration of Municipality of Coimbatore.
The reins of the hospital’s administration were taken over by the Government of Madras in the year 1912.
50 Years Completion – The hospital completed 50 years in 1959.
The theory to convert the government district-head-quarters-hospital to teaching-hospital and to start a medical college became a reality in 1966. The great industrialist & scientist of Coimbatore, Sri Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, stepped in and generously donated 153 acres of land to the government in order to build a fully fledged medical college.
Born in 1966 – Thus in 1966 was born Coimbatore Medical College at Coimbatore. The college affiliated to Madras University, and later affiliated in 1982 to Bharathiar University. Finally in 1988 affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai.
Admission in MBBS Course – For getting admission into MBBS course in Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore. The students’ marks in their 12th class board examinations are the criteria. Admission process conducted by Selection Committee Directorate of Medical Education, Chennai.
The selection of the students is done based on the marks obtained in their 12th board examination for 85% seats and remaining 15% all India quota. No Entrance Test.
Latest Additions in Coimbatore Medical College – CMCH in 2014-15
It cost to the tune of Rs 80 Lakhs to CMCH to modernise its existing infrastructure with the addition of four (4) Operating Theatres.
Even the library was updated with latest books and technology with the-state-of-the-art building.
The Molecular Virology Laboratory is the recent addition of sophisticated research facilitating unit set up in the college premises as well as in the hospital.
The sophisticated laboratory has already conducted 2 studies ( As of today i.e., 15 Jan 2015) and has the approval of ICMR ( Indian Council of Medical Research ).
Indian Council of Medical Research Funding – It is believed a funding in the tune of Rs 3.2 crores was disbursed by ICMR to help Coimbatore Medical College & Hospital ( CMCH ) to set up this sophisticated multidisciplinary research unit.
CMCH Regional Cancer Centre – In order to treat the cancer patients of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. A new building has been constructed by Public Works Department’s medical wing as the expansion of the capacity of hospital.
The Regional Cancer Centre has been build with the approval and nod of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

MBBS Seats to Increase in Coimbatore Med. College
It is expected for the MBBS seats to increase in this government Medical College from the academic year 2015-16.
This development took place at a meeting held on 29 December 2014 under the chairmanship of Health Secretary, where an approval has been given for the proposal to increase MBBS seats in Coimbatore Medical College.
