There are 22 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.
21 affiliated to Dr. MGR Medical University Tamil Nadu and one to Madras University.
Directorate Medical Education allocates seats to the locals of Tamil Nadu.
Allocation is based on the marks obtained in the Board Examinations of Tamil Nadu every year by merit and centralized counseling.
“There are 2055 MBBS seats and 1079 PG seats available for admission in the government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.”
The students passing out of these government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu awarded degrees recognized by Medical Council of India.
Eligibility for studying in MBBS in Tamil Nadu – The minimum marks for eligibility in each subject of Biology (or joint Botany & Zoology) Physics & Chemistry:
- 60% for other communities;
- 60% for Backward class and Backward class Muslim;
- 55% for Most Backward Classes & Denotified communities;
- 40% for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Caste–Arunthathiyar & Scheduled Tribes;
- 45% for Physically Challenged Category – (Locomotory disability of Lower Limbs alone)
Course Fees – The course fees is Rs 12,290/- per year.
This includes tuition fees, special fees which includes
- medical exam fees,
- library fees,
- caution deposit,
- university fees,
- HSC verification fees,
- Red Cross,
- Miscellaneous fee &
- flag day fees.
Distribution of Seats – The seats in the government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are distributed and allocated as per the category of classes and castes:
- Open Category – 31%
- Backward Class – 30%. From 30% backward class seats, 3.5% will be allocated to Muslims.
- Most Backward Class – 20%
- Scheduled Caste – 18 % .From 16% scheduled caste seats, 18% allocated to Arunthathiyar Caste
- Scheduled Tribe – 1 %
Directorate of Medical Education & Merit List – Directorate of Medical Education conducts the counseling and allocation of MBBS seats in the government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.
The selections committee will publish the merit list of the selected candidates on websites: “www.tnhealth.org” and “www.tn.gov.in”.
