Kilpauk Medical College. MBBS 150 Seats. PG 105 Seats. The college came into existence at Chennai, in the year 1960. Initially was a Government Women’s Medical College. From 1967 even male student were allowed for admission into this prestigious 5th oldest government medical institution of Tamil Nadu. The medical college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.
MBBS, MD, MS, DM, MCh & Diploma Courses – The UG course is MBBS. The PG courses are in Diploma, MD, MS, DM and MCh. The Courses are recognized by Medical Council of India.
Origin of College – In 1925, the institution was born out of the initiation of Nationalism followed by motivation to keep our traditional indigenous medicine alive. In 1947, came the recommendations from the Government of Madras as well as the Government of India, to upgrade the medical institution. The institution being known as “College of Indian Medicine” followed by, in 1948 being called “College of Indigenous Medicine”.
The year 1953 saw the college being again renamed as College of Integrated Medicine. But in 1960 the indigenous medicine was closed and with the entering of allopathic medicine into the fold, thus started MBBS Degree course. All these years only women were admitted to study.
In the year 1965, the institution became recognized as Women’s Medical College and named as Kilpauk Medical College. The medical college became a co-educational institution in1967, with male students also joining to study MBBS.
