MCI Recognized Seat in PG Degree / PG Diploma Medical Course means a seat duly given recognition by Medical Council of India to the university or college which has the faculty and facilities as per norms.
Hence the medical college permitted by MCI to admit a MBBS eligible graduate to study a course in Post Graduate Degree Medical of 3 years duration and Post Graduate Diploma Medical for 2 years.
The MBBS graduates who have completed their graduation from a college having recognition by Medical Council of India are eligible to appear for the Entrance Test conducted by the University / College. The seats are secured by the aspirants who achieve ranks on merit.
The question is “What is the meaning & importance of MCI Recognized Seat in PG?” To understand let us follow the explanation –
“Medical Council of India gives certain number of seats in particular specialization to the college or university depending on the minimum facilities under the norms set by Medical Council of India, thus allowing the university or college to admit eligible MBBS graduates”.
Every year the Medical Council of India authorities inspect the college or university to check whether the college or university is meeting the norms set by Medical Council of India, and this inspection is carried out every year till the complete duration of the course.
After 3 years for PG Degree or 2 years for PG Diploma if the Medical Council of India is satisfied with the facilities & faculty of the specialization of this college or university, then Medical Council of India gives a recognition status to this particular specialization of PG seats to the college. Hence the name MCI recognized seat.
“Thus we understand when Medical Council of India gives permission to the medical university or college to admit an eligible MBBS graduate, then this seat remains a permitted seat till it is given recognition by Medical Council of India to become a MCI recognized seat.”
The importance & advantage of a MCI recognized seat is that on completion of the duration of the course in a MCI Recognized seat, the PG graduate can practice in any part of India irrespective of his origin or local of any state of India.
“The doctor who acquired PG Degree in a MCI recognized seat becomes completely eligible to apply for job in any reputed government hospital or government medical colleges, or for teaching or any other significant post or practice in any part of the country, in any state, city, town or village of India.”
Not to forget even to go for higher studies for being eligible to apply for super-specialties’ courses or to appear for the entrance, it is mandatory that the aspirant has completed his post graduation in a MCI recognized seat.
Mentioned below is the High Court vedict confirming the importance of MCI Recognized seat –
Directorate of Medical Education & Research, Maharashtra in the year 2008 relaxed the rule by allowing students who completed post-graduation even in a permitted seat be allowed to apply for entrance and so to join a super speciality course.
However, in the year 2009 Bombay High Court Division Bench led by Justice D K Deshmukh held that only students who have completed MD or MS degree in MCI Recognized seat can be admitted to post-graduate ‘Doctor of Medicine’ – Super Speciality Courses.
